Chapter 14

Fall Out

The world was hazy when it returned. And painful. Awareness assaulted him: the light, the noise, the pounding in his head and the warmth of liquid on his face. He wanted to move, but his body wouldn’t respond. It wanted to just lie there on the uncompromising concrete in a pool of its own blood. He was tempted to give in to that, but an unexpected voice had made him stir.

“Get out of my sight,” the voice was saying. “If I see you tomorrow it’ll be for the last time.”

“You’re firing me?”

“Did I say I was firing you? I said don’t come in tomorrow.”

“His car’s blocking me in.”

“Walk home for all I care. Just go.”

Connor dragged his arms towards his torso and used them to push himself up. Red dripped from his mouth and face. He groaned and rolled onto his side. When he looked up with the one eye that would open, it was to see Mark’s retreating back and Artie’s grim expression.

Artie crouched down to his level and inspected his face. “Anything broken?”

Conner felt his cheek. Used his tongue to check that all his teeth were where they should be. “No.”

“Lost your memory again?”

“No.”

“Got it all back?”

How could he tell? “Dunno.”

“Did you hit him?”

Connor got gingerly to his feet, Artie offering some much needed support, and shook his head.

“Good, that’s good. Then it’s all on him. I should have known, you know. I should have guessed that last year’s tussle was because of her.” He paused. “I guessed I thought more of the two of you than that.” He looked away.

“What are you doing here, old man?” Connor had too much going on right now to worry about Artie’s disappointment.

“Dane called.”

“Right.”

“I have half a mind to knock you out myself,” Artie’s voice wavered and he swallowed. “I told you not to hurt her, Connor. She’s suffered enough. Can’t you see that she’s suffered enough? You don’t need to remember anything; you don’t need to know her for more than a day to see that she’s in pain!”

“I know.” His voice sounded thick. He leaned against the wall and held his breath a moment. “I didn’t mean it. I panicked. She has this big secret, and I feel… She should have told me.”

Artie pressed his fingers to his temple and turned on the spot. He threw his hand out, clearly agitated. “Would you admit to having being engaged to that excuse of a man?”

Connor pushed himself off the wall. “You knew? How could you possibly know?”

“No one ever gives me enough credit. I just know, okay? Let me ask you something: Have you told Emma about Asha? About how you went to the first woman that you knew would have you, just so that you could flaunt her in Emma’s face? Or how about the brief thing you had a year ago with what’s-her-name from head office?”

“I don’t remember—”

“You never told her before the accident when you remembered everything. You kept those things from her. Are you
